It is quite unusual and it needs a complete disregard of long established perceptions and practices to fit a car with a car body completely out of wood! Car enthusiasts most probably raised their eyebrows and probably had doubting faces in light of this plan. Experience in working with the material wood arise some existential questions; Isn’t wood a material that easily breaks? How to provide enough stability? And how is it possible to produce a complete car body out of wood? But these arguments (and also more) can be easily weakened if you have a look to the classic boat building industry, where since many decades first-class and high-quality boat hulls are built, even in the high-price segment.
With this conviction and according to the motto “Something that proved to be successful in boat building will also prove itself to be good in car manufacturing”, a guy in his mid-forties, Friend Wood, started to built his own vehicle as far as possible out of the material wood in the second half of the 1980s. It proved to be quite useful that the Briton was a furniture maker and therefore very experienced in working with the material wood. Friend Wood built the complete car, except the engine with transmission, the axles with suspension, the tires with wheel rims and the disks, out of the renewable resource. In total it took him 2,000 working hours to finish his car. The engine came from an aged Citroen Dyane 6, had a displacement of 602 cc and a performance of 32 hp.
At the sight of his finished three wheeler the constructor should have been pleased, as he met all his targets. Highlight of the car was the finish of the car body. It was equipped with a striking mahogany veneer with natural grain. This was quite pleasing for the eye and outclassed every sophisticated painting work.
